Love this song, love this photo! Totally listening to it right now. :)

Ali + Dan + Why You Should Have Your Picture Taken Without Your Children

This is my sister, Ali, and her husband, Dan. Their children have heavily inspired the genesis of my family photography work, as they had the first grandchild of our family back in 2004. Two additional children later, their family is officially large and full of love!

This is one reason I had them drive from Harrisonburg, VA to sit for a formal portrait: the more children we have, the less we formally document our own growth. And in Ali and Dan’s case, after almost 10 years of marriage, I don’t think I’ve seen one formal portrait of them alone.

So often, and with all good intentions, parents let pictures of their children document their own lives. But, while our children are always the most important thing, we still need to take a moment to ourselves. And that’s what this portrait is for.

I love looking at this shot and thinking of all that Ali and Dan have accomplished together. They are the center of their ever-growing family, and after almost 10 years, they fill the roll with love and grace. That’s what I think of, when I look at this picture.

Laura + Community Collective | Playing in the West Main Studio

Laura is one of my warehouse-mates. She is one of four co-founders of the shop housed in front of my studio, Community: An Artist Collective. They have been there since September 2012, and have been a constant source of inspiration since they day they moved in. Each item that they sell in their store was handcrafted by a local artist. Every month, they rotate the artists featured, so it’s worth it to pay frequent visits to the space so that you don’t miss out!

One day in late January, when I was very, very pregnant, Laura and I shot a few rolls of film in my studio. I look at these photos, and I think about how much I love the studio, and how much the ladies at Community love their space, and how it’s all going to disappear this summer with the upcoming Marriott hotel development. The end is near for our enjoyment of our little spot on 315 West Main Street. And it’s been grand!

For this portrait series, Laura is wearing clothing by Willow Knows and jewelry by Academy, both artists featured at Community.

Baby Jackson | Fine Art Film Portrait

This handsome little baby was just a sparkle in his parents’ eye when I shot their wedding just a year ago! Now, here he is, pudgy and beautiful as can be.

Just like at their wedding, these two displayed so much passion and love for family during their session that it left me feeling full and inspired. Thank you for letting me photograph your budding family, Jessica & Matt!

Jim | Headshot | Fine Art Film Portrait

This is my husband, Jim Coan. He has needed to update his headshot for a while. You would have thought that, as the husband of a photographer, he would have ample opportunities to make that happen. But it’s not true. I’m like a roofer with a perpetually leaky roof, and sometimes things like photographing my own husband slip through the cracks.

Jim is a professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Virginia. At the center of his research is the Social Baseline Theory, a theory on the social regulation of emotion in humans. It inspires my work.

We just did a few rolls for this series, as we had little Lulu with us, and Jim was in the middle of a busy workday, on his way to wax poetic about all things science-y. This first picture makes me swoon! I’m so lucky to have you in my life, Jimmy.
